Is it a little blasphemous for someone to write themselves commandments. Perhaps, but a little bit of blasphemy is how the world gets places isn't it? Where would we be without Martain Luther or even-- dare I say it-- Henry VIII if it comes to it?
I got the idea of writing my own commandments from The Happiness Project . It's a really fun little blog that I think has a lot of valid and interesting things to say. I'm not going to try and emulate it with mine, so much as follow the mold.
The idea of the Twelve Commandments-- though I'm sticking to the traditional ten-- is to write down your life's philosophies. It's the same reason people write down a New Year's Resolution and young girls tend to write their names alongside the last name of the boy you like.
Somehow, the written word makes it real.
You think this would be less true on the internet, where the tragedy of the edit button runs rampant, but I think that only emphasizes the effect. Other people read it, so other people will hold you to it.
Having beaten that horse to death, I now give you the 10 Commandments of Aubrey (and my blog):
1. Never accept information, always research
2. Don't let the negative win
3. Try and be fair
4. Accept what I cannot understand
5. Do not accept what I can change
6. Be courageous enough to speak out
7. Be wise enough to be silent about what you don't know
8. Be willing to discuss, but not offend
9. Be true to my ideals and beliefs
10. Be honest with myself
More information on them and the reasons for them is pending (including why I don't like the edit button, but still use it).
